2024-5, World Tour
Productions Sarfati 2024
Created by Akram Khan
I was honoured to work as sound designer with world-renowned dancer and choreographer Akram Khan on a new creation for a company of fourteen internationally acclaimed dancers and musicians.
Presented thanks to the support of Orsolina28 Art Foundation and Muse Art Foundation.
World Premiere: 30 August 2024 at Grand Théâtre de Provence and tour to Singapore, London, Paris, New York, Mumbai, Santa Barbara and Washington.
The sound is dramatic, meditative, roaring and sensitive all at once. Sounds of war - loud booms and crashes - interrupt calmer tones as the score repeatedly rises to a crescendo, arrests in moments of silence, and repeats, mimicking the cyclic nature of life itself, full of pain and joy.

Key to its power are Zeynep Kepekli’s crepuscular lighting and Dave Price’s thunderous soundscapes (the show’s two concessions to 21st-century western stage tropes), which are positively cinematic in the way they pull you wide-eyed into this world.

Most thrilling are the dance passages with the whole group in mesmerising unison, urgently partnering some exhilarating music that is devised and performed by seven musicians lining the sides of the stage, with a big round copper drum, the mizhavu, at the back. There is atmospheric lighting, and an often sombre feel with regular rumbles of thunder (or something worse). There is a sense of foreboding about the world that echoes through the centuries, connecting the ancient and the present.
